About University of California, Santa Barbara
The University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) is situated in the heart of gorgeous Santa Barbara. Hailed as a research university within the prestigious University of California system, UCSB overlooks the Pacific Ocean and miles of pristine coastline. Vineyards and wineries surround the outskirts of town; trendy shops and cafe surround downtown streets.
Just off Highway 101, UC Santa Barbara was started in 1909. The University is aesthetically known for its architecture and beach property, but more importantly for its doctoral and grad programs. Additionally, UCSB maintains a College of Engineering, College of Letters and Science, College of Creative Studies, and the Bren School of Environmental Science and Engineering.
UC Santa Barbara holds its students to high academic standards. Incoming freshmen are expected to have obtained a minimum 3.00 GPA in high school. Candidates are also expected to have taken both the SATs and ACT. A rigorous course program must have been followed previous to being accepted to USCB, including a minimum of two years of a foreign language and four years of college-preparatory English.
Athletes are also welcome at UCSB. The Gauchos are part of the Big West Conference. Soccer and basketball are most popular, but other sports such as baseball, golf, and tennis are available. Many students choose to participate in the numerous intramural leagues when not studying.
